The Subaru Outback, which houses a 3.6L engine, uses fully synthetic motor oil for optimal performance. That being said, semi-synthetic motor oil is also a viable option. For best results, Subaru recommends using the SAE 5w-30 viscosity oil. Subaru also recommends changing oils once every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. When changing oils, make sure to consistently stick with the same oil, or at the very least, a similar one. Fully synthetic oils provide a greater degree of protection, efficiency and performance. A motor oil change can be done at home, as these oils can easily be purchased at Walmart or Auto-zone. That being said, it can also be done at an auto-shop or mechanic for a higher price.

There are 2 engine oil recommendations for the 2014 Subaru Outback. The first is a 0W-20 viscosity engine oil for models with 4-cylinder engines. The second is a 5W-30 viscosity and synthetic oil for models with 6-cylinder engines.
