Front suspension noise in the BMW X5 e70 can be caused by a variety of things. There could be a loose nut on a strut or the shock tower which could cause the strut to move around making clunking sounds. Another potential problem is one or more of the rubber bushings could have dried out, which would allow the linkages to grind on each other. The linkages can become worn and a gap can happen which would allow the two rods to clank against one another. The air spring bag can develop a leak and not cushion the vehicle while driving. There have been a couple service bulletins over they years issued by BMW concerning suspension issues. One was issued in early 2008 for the front sway bar and the other was for suspension failure.
Control arms need to be replaced frequently. I.e about every 50,000 miles.
