The 2005 Ford Explorer uses DOT 3 fluid in the vehicle. DOT 3 is a hydraulic type of fluid and is used from the brake master cylinder through the brake lines to the calipers to allow Your vehicle to stop. I suggest checking Your brake fluid every time that You change Your oil. You will want to make sure that it is full. If it is low then it is likely that there is a leak somewhere in the system. The most common place that leaks develop are at the fittings where it connects to the calipers. If Your brakes are leaking You will want to address it immediately because it can lead to a loss of braking power.
