The type of brake fluid that should be used in the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu is any DOT 3 brake fluid. The original recommendation for the vehicle was part number 12377967 and now the part number is 19353126. There are a couple reasons why the brake fluid level might go down, one is because of normal brake lining wear and the other is because of a leak in the brake or clutch hydraulic system. When the brake fluid level goes below a certain level, you should be notified by the brake warning light. Before adding brake fluid and before even taking off the cap to the reservoir, wipe it down so nothing gets into the reservoir. You should flush and change the fluid every 60,000 miles or so.
