The 2001 Ford Ranger uses ATF+4 fluid in the power steering system. This is a synthetic hydraulic fluid that will be able to handle the pressure and heat generated by the steering system on Your truck. If You notice that the steering on Your truck is heavier than normal the first thing that You should do is check the steering reservoir to make sure that it is full. If it is low then You will need to inspect the rest of the steering system. The first thing that You should check are the lines from the pump to the steering rack. If any of those are loose then You will notice fluid leaking from some of the lines.

For your 2001 ford ranger you want to use a full synthetic power steering fluid.
