The 2000 VW Jetta uses SAE 5W-30 oil in the engine. Volkswagen recommends that You use synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. There are two main types of oil on the market these days, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is newer and engineered to give You better wear protection and longer life than the conventional petroleum based option on the market. This means You only need to change synthetic every 7,500 miles compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles for conventional. You should check Your oil at least once a month. When checking it You will want to make sure that it is filled and free from any signs of debris or damage which can damage the engine.
