The MAP sensor on a 2001 Mazda Protege is located on a bracket right behind the passenger upper strut mount. The sensor provides instant manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit. The data is used to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass flow rate, which in turn determines the required fuel delivery for perfect combustion. MAP sensors fail by getting clogged, contaminated, or damaged. Sometimes, engine heat overcooks the MAP sensor's electronics or cracks vacuum lines. If the MAP sensor goes bad, the ECM cant accurately calculate engine load, which means the air-fuELRatio will become either too rich (more fuel) or too lean (less fuel).
