The 2002 BMW 525i uses up to 6.5 liters (6.8 Quarts) of 5w-30 synthetic motor oil. Engine Oil plays a very crucial role in protecting the engines internal parts from damage, keeping the engine cool and preventing gunk from accumulating inside the engine. Oil filters also need to be replaced and failing to do so will cause the filter to degrade. In some cases, it can cause severe engine damage. Over time, engine oil breaks down and loses its ability to provide lubrication in between the engine parts. The oil and filter should be changed as soon as is convenient, to maintain protection of internal engine components. They should be changed every 3000 to 6000 miles, at least.
