The 2002 Ford Explorer rear axle nut size iS35mm as stated officially by Ford. It is very important and holds the hub to the axle. It fits onto the end of an axle shaft to secure brake rotors and other hardware in place. If the axle nut is loose, then it may cause the bearings to move in and out of the bearing housing, causing damage over time. So it is advisable to get it tightened. The axle nut may look fine but some of the threads might have been damaged while opening it hence to avoid any expensive repairs in the long run it is advisable to use a new axle nut as recommended by the company.
