The recommended type of power steering fluid that should be used in the 2002 Ford Ranger is Mercon V. The original recommendation used to be just Mercon but then it was switched to the Mercon V. The capacity of power steering fluid that is used in the Ranger is about two quarts of fluid. Power steering fluid is hydraulic fluid that transfers power in Your steering system and makes it easier to turn the wheels. The fluid should be flushed and changed every 45,000 miles or so. The cost of the fluid costs anywhere from $6 to $15 per quart depending on where You get it from. The cost to change the fluid if taken to a mechanic is anywhere from $80 to $90 in labor costs.
