The 2009 Mercedes E500 has a transmission fluid capacity of 8.9 quarts. Mercedes recommends that You use MBZ ATF 236.14 fluid any time that You change it. The transmission fluid in Your vehicle is used to help protect the gears from wear and tear. It prevents them from rubbing against each other and having a metal on metal contact which makes them last longer. You should check Your transmission fluid every time that You change Your oil. You will want to make sure that it is completely filled and free from debris. Usually debris in transmission fluid will make it reflective of sparkly because it will be metal shavings in the fluid.
