The 2004 Nissan Xterra uses SAE 5W-30 oil in the engine. Nissan recommends using synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. There are two main types of oil that are on the market today, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is engineered to give You longer life and greater wear protection due to increased lubrication compared to the petroleum-based conventional option. This means You should only need to change synthetic every 7,500 miles compared to every 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend checking Your oil at least once a month. When You do this check You should make sure that it is full and free from any signs of debris or damage that could harm Your engine.
