The 2004 BMW X5 with the 4.4L V8 engine uses SAE 5W-30 oil in the engine. BMW recommends that You use synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. Synthetic oil is a newer type of oil that is engineered to give You greater wear protection for the moving components in Your engine compared to conventional. It is also designed to last longer meaning that You can go 7,500 miles between oil changes compared to the 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional oil. I recommend checking Your oil at least once a month. During this check You should make sure that the oil is full and free from any signs of debris. You will want to change it if You notice metal or debris in it.
