The 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe's purge valve often malfunctions. To locate the part raise the hood and remove the air intake box next to the intake manifold. The purge valve will be found behind the intake manifold. Often referred to as a "solenoid", the purge valve is part of the Santa Fe's EVAP and emissions system. Vapors released by the fuel tank are trapped in the EVAP cannister where charcoal breaks them down into less harmful substances. Fumes are eventually allowed into the engine where they're burned like regular fuel. The purge valve regulates their release. If the PV begins to malfunction, it will often get stuck in the "open" position, or fail to open on time. Symptoms include an illuminated "check engine" light, the P0441 error code, reduced fuel economy and rough idling.

You can locate the purge valve in your 2004 hyundai santa fe on your vehicle's charcoal canister that can be found near the left or right front headlight of the santa fe, depending on year and trim.
