The fuel filter on a 2004 Subaru Legacy can be found under the hood next to the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Begin by removing the hose clamps and the hoses at the top of the filter housing. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the two clamps. Once the clamps are loose grab the hoses and work them back and forth and pulling them off at the same time. Place a rag around the hose while You're removing it, there may be some gas leaking out when You do. There is a buckle style clamp that holds the filter canister in. Unlatch it and then pull the filter out. You may need to take the rubber sleeve off of the old filter and put it on the new. Put the new filter in and clamp it down.

On the 2004 subaru legacy the fuel filter is located inside of the gas tank, on the back left of the vehicle.
