Like many modern vehicles, the 2005 Ford Freestyle is equipped with a "Mass Airflow Sensor" (MAF) as opposed to a MAP or "Manifold Pressure Sensor". The Freestyle's MAP should be located on the air-intake tube, after the air-filter housing. The MAF sensor is responsible for monitoring the amount of air in the engine to ensure appropriate timing and spark. In the Ford Freestyle this is accomplished with a hot wire sensing element that measures the amount of air entering the engine. Air passing over the hot wire will cause it to cool. If the MAF fails You will notice difficulty starting or turning over; frequent stalling; hesitation and/or jerking motions while accelerating and lean or rich idling. Cost to replace averages $170-$320 in parts and labor.
