The coolant temperature sensor on the 2006 Ford Explorer 4.6 is located in the coolant pipe, below the air intake pipe, and behind the right cylinder head. This sensor is used to take the temperature of the coolant in the coolant pipe. In so doing the sensor is able to report how much heat the engine is giving off and to adjust the amount of coolant that is flowing in the system. If this sensor is not working right then You will find that the engine will overheat pretty quickly. This should be avoided as much as possible, as an overheating engine will lead to a cracked head gasket, which is very expensive to fix. Instead, spend the 100 dollars or so and have the sensor replaced as needed.
