The 2006 GMC sierra 1500 rear differential fluid type is Rear Axle SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant. If You need to change the fluid then You will want to make sure You have a large bucket or pool. This is because when You remove the plate on the rear axle all of the old oil is going to come pouring out. Once You get the oil out You will need to bolt the plate back on. Now You can look to the top of the axle for the intake port. Fill the port back with oil and stop when You hit the full line. If there is oil on the axle or plate be sure to wipe this up or it may make a burning smell.
