The starter in a 2006 Mazda Tribute is located at the base of the engine on the passenger side of the engine compartment. This is going to be near where the transmission housing meets up with the motor. The starter motor is an electric motor that is used to turn over Your engine when You start the vehicle. If You hear clicking or grinding from it when You try to start Your car that can indicate that there is a problem with it. If You hear no noise from it then that can mean that there is an electrical problem with the battery. In general if Your starter motor is not working properly You will need to replace it to be able to get Your car started again.
