Among the various configurations for the 2006 Subaru Outback, one of two engine options are used. You'll either have a 2.5L 4Cylinder engine, or a larger 3.0L V6. If You have the smaller 2.5L, You'll use 4.4 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic, though You can safely substitute SAE 5W-40 over the short term. The V6 requireS6.0 quarts of the same. The substitution is not advisable, if it is avoidable; when You use an oil with a heavier weight, it essentially means that it's thicker or more viscous. This can introduce friction into Your engine, which leads to premature wear and tear. Over time, this can cause an early engine failure; it's always best to use the manufacturer's suggested oil with the lowest weight, even if it translates to a few more dollars per oil change.

The owner's manual states you should be using synthetic 5w-30 motor oil for this vehicle.
