The 20017 Nissan Xterra has its fuel filter located in the gas tank line. It forms part of the fuel pump system. The fuel filter is an important part of the fuel system, as it protects the engine from dirt and other impurities. It is a good idea to have it changed along with oil changes. If this filter is left unchanged for a long time, there will be build up which will result in clogging of the filter. That in turn will lead to the engine not receiving adequate gas. If the engine is starved of a good supply, it will have trouble starting. It could also cause jerky movement and rough idling when at a stop light, for instance. Fuel filters are part of ongoing maintenance and should be changed regularly.
