Every vehicle manufactured after 1996 is equipped with an OBD2 or an "Onboard Diagnostics II" system that allows a compatible scanner to connect to the car's computer. Engine and operating malfunctions are recorded through a series of universal codes generated by the computer. These codes are in turn read by an OBD2 compatible scanner once connected to Your vehicle. The 2009 Hyundai Elantra's OBD2 can be found above the driver's pedals at the bottom of the dash. Look to the left of the steering wheel to use at the edge of the panel that sits above the brake pedal. EOBD codes are specific to Europe and European vehicles.
