The 2009 VW Beetle with the 2.5L engine uses SAE 5W-40 oil. It will take 5.5 quarts to refill the oil pan when You do a full oil change. Volkswagen recommends that You use synthetic oil when You do change Your oil. There are two main types of oil on the market, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is made in a lab and offers superior protection for Your engine's components compared to conventional which is petroleum based. The better protection from synthetic means that You will need fewer oil changes as well. Usually You can go 7,500 miles between changes with synthetic compared to the 3,500 to 5,000 when You use conventional. I recommend that You check Your oil every time so You can check the condition and fill level.
