The 2012 Toyota Prius uses OEM Toyota Type-IV transmission fluid in the vehicle. This is a synthetic type of fluid and it will give You great protection for the gears in Your transmission. I suggest that You check Your transmission fluid every time that You change the oil in Your car. When You check the transmission fluid You will want to make sure that it is full and free from any signs of debris. Usually debris will make the transmission fluid look reflective and sparkly since there are metal shavings that are in it. If You do find some debris in Your fluid I recommend that You replace it so that it does not cause any extra damage to the gears.
