The 2016 Ford Focus uses a DOT 3 brake fluid. This is the recommended brake fluid for the car. Most cars can use both DOT 3 and DOT 4, as they are usually compatible. However, it is best to stick to the manufacturer's suggested one. If Your brake fluid is low, the car will normally indicate this by turning on the ABS light warning. This tells You there is a need to top up Your oil or check the brake system. The brake fluid can easily be topped up Yourself. You can purchase cans of it at Your local auto store like Autozone, or even stores like Target and Wal-mart.

I own a 2016 Ford Focus. Went and bought Dot 3 before checking the cap. It says use DOT 4 right in the lid. NOT dot 3. My suggestion is to check your cap first like I didn’t unfortunately.
