The power window relay in the BMW E36 is located behind the plastic knee panel and metal knee bolster on the driver's side below the steering wheel. There is once electrical connector that needs to be unplugged from the backside of the plastic panel. Once the panel and metal bolster have been removed, look above the emergency brake for the relay. The bracket that holds this and other relays can be unclipped and lowered so they can be replaced easily. Grasp two sides of the replay firmly between Your fingers and pull it out of its socket. A new relay will cost between $15 and $25 and will take less than 15 minutes to replace. If You choose to have a dealer or repair shop change it out, You could expect to pay between $50 to $70 per hour for labor costs.
