If Your BMW is returning a P1017 code, it means there is an issue with the valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor. The average cost to replace this part is $250 to $450. In most cases, it will be recommended to replace the three related gaskets, as well. These include the ESS gasket, valvetronic motor gasket, and valve cover gasket. The valvetronic motor actuates this sensor and ultimately controls the valve lift. The trouble code is returned when the sensor is not setting according to factory specifications. The cause of this can be just a faulty sensor. However, there may also be an open or shorted harness or poor electrical connection. Repairing this issue usually consists of checking for bent, broken, or corroded pins first and then inspecting related connectors and the wiring harness.
