The tailgate cable capacity for the Chevrolet Silverado can vary depending on factors such as placement of the load, the gross vehicle weight, wheelbase, and length of the loading Ramp. Typically tailgate support cables are 3/16" with a safe working load of 840 lbs. Cable tension ranges froM307 to 710 for the 2006 2500 HD with a 300 lb load placed evenly (i.e., 150 lbs on either side). The larger number accounts for a load at the very edge of the tailgate as it is being loaded in. When loaded to into the bed and one end resting either fully on the tailgate or on the edge, the total tension iS307-348 lbs. If the load is either too heavy or improperly placed, the tailgate can either buckle or the cables can snap.
