The rear differential fluid used on the 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 is MOPAR Synthetic Gear Lubricant SAE 75W-140 (MS8985). If Your axle is limited slip then it is recommended to add 5 ounces of MOPAR Limited Slip Additive. The purpose of the differential fluid on Your vehicle, as You may already know, is to lubricate the components of Your axle. The components of Your rear axle include a ring, pinion gears, bearings, and other important parts. If You let the oil get too low, then You risk having metal to metal contact and thus Your differential overheating. I would recommend changing the differential fluid as stated on Your owner's manual to avoid overheating and a costly repair bill.
