The block heater cord in the Mazda CX5 is located on the driver side of the engine compartment between the fender and the air box. The block heater is used to warm the diesel engine prior to starting when the temperatures fall below 5 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it easier to ignite the diesel fuel at startup, otherwise the fuel would be dumping into the cylinder while You are cranking on the ignition. This could flood the engine and cause the fuel to leak into the oil pan and dilute the oil. This will lower the lubricating performance of the oil and could eventually damage the engine. Per warming the engine will also allow the oil to flow easier allowing it to protect the engine quicker, especially as the temperatures fall.
