The P1714 on a Ford indicates a Shift Solenoid 'A' fault. As You know a solenoid converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. If You see this message, it literally means that the shift solenoid "A" is faulty, though it can also mean the harness to that solenoid is open or shorted, or that there's a poor electrical connection. You have shift solenoids from A to D, and they vary hydraulic pressure by actuating a valve. The transmission control unit applies current to the shift solenoids that effects this varied pressure. When no current is present, SSA should fully close the valves to the regulators, and the converse when there is current. When You see this error, this operation as I just outlined isn't occurring as it's supposed to. Fixing is going to involve likely replacing the SSA.
