P251A on a Ford Transit means the power take-off enable switch circuit is open. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the Power take-Off (PTO) Enable Switch circuit. The PCM sets the OBDII code when the PTO Enable Switch is out of factory specifications.Power take-offs (PTOs) are mechanical gearboxes that attach to apertures provided on truck transmissions and are used to transfer the power of the vehicle engine to auxiliary components, most commonly a hydraulic pump. The PTO takes energy that wouldve been wasted otherwise and transfers it over to another source. This is what helps it to perform a variety of entirely necessary functions. For example, towing wouldnt be possible at the weight amount that it is without having power take-off.
