Toyota makes it a bit of a pain in the rear end to change the oil filter on the Toyota Highlander, since You'll need to remove a plastic trim piece from behind the bumper to access it. While this is just held on with clips, it still presents an additional step to the replacement -- one which You won't have to complete on most other vehicles. Once You remove the plastic panel, You should be able to see and get a tool on the oil filter part way up and near the center of the engine bay (from the bottom). It's important that You replace the oil filter each time You're swapping out the oil, which should be done every 3,000 miles with conventional oil, or around 5,000 with synthetic.

The Toyota Highlander oil filter is located in the front and to the right of the engine under your hood.
