If Your 2009 Nissan Altima has a manual transmission then You should use Genuine Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, viscosity SAE 75W-85 and if You've got a CVT transmission then it's best that You use Genuine Nissan CVT fluid NS-2. While You can find compatible fluids from other brands for the manual transmission it is not recommended that You use any other type of fluid for the CVT. The manual points out that using another transmission fluid will damage Your CVT transmission and it is not covered under the Nissan new vehicle limited warranty. It is also suggested that You change Your CVT fluid every 25,000 miles or so. -

Referring to the Nissan Altima, NS2 is used in the 2007 - 2012 series, NS3 is used in the 2013 and newer series because the CVT was redesigned
