The 2003 Chevy Silverado's TCM or transmission control module should be found on either side of the transmission. It is generally a small metal device equipped with a plug-in feature that contains monitoring software for optimal shifting. The TCM uses data supplied from the driver's brake pedal position, wheel sensors, throttle position sensor and the transmission temperature sensor to manage gear and shift timing. If the TCM is going bad, a driver will experience difficulty downshifting when slowing down or coming to a complete stop; slippage, slowed or delayed upshifting when accelerating; or shifting to neutral without driver input. The cost to replace the tranny's module in a Silverado retails around $1,200 in parts and labor.
