The 2004 Chevy Silverado speed sensor is located on the right side near the rear of the transmission. The transmission speed sensors or vehicle speed sensors (VSS) are used to calculate the gear ratio of the transmission to determine the vehicle's speed and ensure proper shifting. Some symptoms of a bad or failing speed VSS is harsh or improper shifting. Without a valid speed signal from these sensors, the PCM will not be able to correctly control the shifting of gears within the transmission. Your cruise control may not work. On the tail of the transmission, I've got a 04 Silverado 5.3 extended cab and it's on the passenger side, hope that helps
