There's two components to the neutral safety switch in Your 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. Inside the cab, You've got a small catch that's attached to the left of the gear shifter under the plastic trim. In the engine itself, there's a switch on the transmission near the shift cable, which is on the left side of the engine compartment, at the top of the tranny. When I had to replace mine, it was $82 just for the part, and I didn't want to pay labor on top of it, so switched it out myself. This was a matter of just disconnecting a couple of wires and bolts, so quite easy. Just note You shouldn't even consider just removing this, as it's a necessary safety feature to prevent starting the car's engine in any gear other than park or neutral.
