The temperature sensor in a 2009 Chevy Equinox is located on the rear of the cylinder head where the coolant pipe comes out of the top of the engine to go back to the radiator. This sensor has the job of measuring the temperature of coolant before it goes back to the radiator to cool down. If You notice that the temperature gauge on Your vehicle is not working properly then it is often a problem with a coolant temperature sensor. Fortunately it is an easy thing to replace and You will just need to disconnect the sensor from the block and hose and replace it. I would suggest checking the wiring though before You go ahead and buy a new one.

This is located under the hood going back into the cap, near the radiator. Look for the thermostat it is near that.
