The crankshaft position sensor in a 2000 Ford Focus is located at the base of the engine block and there is a plastic cover that is over it. This has the job of monitoring where the crankshaft is in its rotation in the engine. The sensor can send signals to Your ECU to allow it to speed up or reduce the timing as necessary. This can be done by adding or removing fuel and air timing to the intake and injectors. If Your engine is running very rough it is commonly a problem with this sensor. Usually when it starts to fail You will get a check engine light on Your dash which will let You know that the signal from it is not getting to the ECU anymore.

The crankshaft position sensor is located at the bottom of the engine block, accessed from the front by removing a plastic sheath at the bottom of the engine bay.
