The knock sensor on Your 2001 Toyota Solara is located on the rear side of the engine, to the right of the exhaust pipe, right below the intake manifold. Signs that Your knock sensor has gone bad is if the check engine light comes on and Your engine's running rough. I f You have this replaced in the shop, labor's going to be around $300, and it's easy to just fix it Yourself. Jack up the front end of Your Solara and then disconnect the battery. Slide under Your car and disconnect the wiring harness to the knock sensor itself. There's a small brace that You may need to remove, which will have botH12mm and 14mm bolts. Once that's done, You can disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Then, You'll need a 27mm socket to get the sensor itself out, and the angle's a bit uncomfortable, so be patient and gentle!
