The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on a 2001 Toyota 4Runner is located near the bottom front area of the transmission. The simplest way to remove one is using a 1-inch deep well socket. The VSS calculates the transmission's actual gear ration while the vehicle is moving. There are technically two. One to monitor the input shaft speed and the other to monitor the output. Symptoms of a bad sensor include hesitation, sporadic jumps or rough shifting with the transmission. You may also notice issues with the speedometer. The cruise control generally won't work if the speed sensor is failing either. The average cost to replace the VSS in the 2001 4Runner is $290 to $400. Labor makes up about $70 to $90 of that total.
