Your Toyota Tacoma engine light and Trac off light on could be caused by a loose gas cap. This is a common problem that has been reported by many owners. There have been complaints of this issue coming back after filling up with gas. The rubber that connects the neck with the gas tank, needs to be replaced. This seems like a common problem. You can disconnect the positive (red) cable on the battery for about 3 min. To reset it. It could also be a bad sensor. A owner reported that after having brake work done, they had this problem. The traction control light's main lead is at the wheel. Make sure it was not disconnected or damaged.

Just happened on my 2017 sport. Vehicle sat for about 2 months and had to be jump started. Took it to Autozone who ran a diagnosis which came up as the Crankshaft sensor needing replacement. They had the part for almost $400. I had them check the battery which they said needed replacement. I put a new battery in, $175, and the lights reset on their own.

It is a common issue for the traction control light to come on when the check engine light does too. If you fix the check engine light problem, the trac off light should reset as well.

Toyota needs to recall all these vehicles that have this problem and fix it. It's no longer just a few people having this problem it's most people at this point. We need to complain to consumer protection

My Toyota Corolla, 2014 but low miles also has this problem. We have bought new gas caps (the last one directly from Toyota), replaced a bunch of stuff related to the gas, my husband knows the details. And after about a day and a half the lights come on again.

The other side of the gas tank can be the problem when the Trac light & engine light come on...the tank has a vacuum hose attached at the top of the tank and the gas input nozzle. Make sure this vacuum hose is properly connected and may need to be replaced.

2017 Pro Taco - Agreeing with Tina S.'s answer from 12/2020. Bought a new locking gas cap, (which caused the same issue on my 2011 FJ Cruiser, (engine light)) went to fill up the Taco gas tank 2 days later and the engine light and Trac off light are on. Will give the pos battery cable a try.

Had this issue leaving work. Truck wouldn’t do any better than 40 to 50 kms/hour. Had to pull over to let everyone pass me . I took the positive off the battery and waited a few minutes then reconnected. It worked great and reset the computer .The trac and engine light went out and the Tacoma worked perfectly.

Disconnecting and connecting the negative battery terminal worked for my 2014 Tacoma as well. Thanks Tina for saving me a trip to the auto parts store.

The gas cap was indeed not sealing due to grit on the gasket. I did a 2 min clean on the gas cap gasket with alcohol while I waited for the disconnected the battery for 3 min. No more warning lights s

Hey! I did both the gas cap and the pos batt terminal and it worked! I’m completely and utterly stoked! I live an hour and a half away from the nearest garage and it saved me a day or two or three! You guys totally rock!!

Bought a new locking gas cap off Amazon. Then the Trac off and check engine light came on afterwards. Guess I’ll try the battery cable on/off to see if that resets

My 2017, with 23,500 now, about 4 months ago started with the engine light and trac off light on. Disconnected POS no result. Disconnected NEG no result. Disconnected both no result. Already 2 Toyotas batteries replaced, too much noise underneath especially when driving over a speedbum, run-out of1234yf Refrigerant with less that 22,000 miles, twice burned the blower relay.

2013 Toyota Tacoma trac off and check engine light came on. Went to Autozone and coded the computer (P0420).Autozone said try “Cataclean” from Amazon (or anywhere), about $25. Ran gas tank down to 1/4 tank, poured in Cataclean, drove 10-15 miles. Refueled March 15, 2023
