The reason the systems in your Ford Escape reset after a battery change is because they are made up of components that use Volatile Memory. There are two main types of memory, Non-Volatile Memory and Volatile Memory, NVM is able to retain the data stored on it after power has been removed, like the SSD in your computer. The other type, VM, cannot hold the data. The systems in your Escape use VM because it is faster and will last longer. If they were made using NVM you would have to have the major computer components of your vehicle replaced every 5 - 6 years. If you need to replace the battery and cannot risk losing your data, the best thing to do is get one of those jump boxes that plug into the 12v cigarette lighter port. This will energize the system while you change the battery and keep the electronics from losing their memory.

It is recommended to go to a dealer to deal with resets after having the battery changed, as it requires a specific kind of software to read the car.
