The Ford Explorer coolant leak at the back of the engine is usually caused by the hoses that run from the engine into the heater core at the thermostat. These hoses connect to the outlet port from the engine and head through the firewall into the heater core that is located under Your dash. If one of these hoses comes loose, or gets damaged then You will notice a coolant leak. I recommend that You repair or replace this as soon as possible. If You lose too much coolant from Your engine that can lead to the vehicle overheating when it loses cooling capacity. If Your engine overheats it can cause permanent damage to the cylinders and pistons.

The hoses via the radiator and the heater core are the only places where the coolant could leak.
