If the fuel gauge is not working on Your 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac then there may be a problem with the fuel sending unit. The sending unit has a float on it that will measure the fuel level in the tank and if something on that is failing then You will not get an accurate reading at the dash. I would suggest checking the relay to the fuel pump for any damage first because it could be something as simple as a bad relay or wire connection. It could also be caused by a bad wire to the actual gauge on the backside of it. You can usually test those wires for continuity by removing the top of the dash.

To reset the fuel gauge on the 2005 ford explorer you need to hit the odo/trip button, then turn the vehicle off. Hold the button and turn it back on and make sure it says it is in odo/trip mode. Now turn the vehicel off again. Wait 10 min, turn it on, then turn it off. It is now reset. If this does not work then the gauge may not be getting power, or the wires leading to it are bad.
