If the temperature gauge is not working in Your 2011 Chevy Cruze then usually that is a problem with the temperature sensor that is located on the radiator. The temperature sensor is used to measure the temperature of the coolant and report it to You at the dash. If the sensor is failing it will not report any information to Your gauge. There will also usually be a check engine light when Your temperature sensor is failing. Replacing the sensor fortunately is usually under $100. It is important to keep an eye on Your engine's temperatures because if it overheats it can cause permanent damage to the cylinders and pistons.

2011 chevy cruze unworkable temperature gauge is most likely caused by a faulty 2nd temperature sensor on the passenger side of the radiator (about halfway up). This sensor needs to be changed because it operates in tandem with the thermostat-located primary sensor.
