The typical reason you'd see the speedometer on your Chevrolet Colorado fail to function is going to be because of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), which relays information to the engine control unit (ECU) about how fast your vehicle's going. A failure with this sensor is usually accompanied by a P0500 diagnostic trouble code (DTC). This sensor also has duties related to the cruise control system, so it won't just be the speedometer that's affected. You can also have a wiring issue that'll cause the speedometer to fail; you can check the fuse to see if that's blown; if it is and it continues to go, then there's likely a compromised wire or other issue with the engine harness. The speedometer itself can actually fail; while rare, this can be part of a bigger problem with the instrument cluster, or even the ECU.
My 2017 with 36575 miles on it had that happen today. The DIC just went blank. Someone on another site suggested turning the truck off, locking it, and use the remote start. I did that and amazingly enough everything came back. Strange.

If the speedometer of your chevy colorado isn't working, it will typically be caused by a vss (vehicle speed sensor) problem, or a bad ecu. The vss is one part of a sensor system which helps to keep you safe (traction control, abs, cruise control).
