The most likely causes of a whine while accelerating in Your Ford Transit is going to be one of the belt driven parts. If the whine goes up and down with the RPMs even while in neutral You are almost guaranteed to have a faulty alternator clutch or belt tensioner pulley. The alternator clutch is the part of the alternator that allows it to freespin when the rpms of the engine suddenly drop due to breaking or changing gears. The Belt tensioner pulley is the part that keeps constant tension on the main drive belt that turns the alternator, cams, waterpump and any other accessories Your vehicle may have. Over time the belt stretches and dries out which would cause it to slip constantly without the belt tensioner. A decent mechanic can diagnose which part has failed relatively easily.

If your ford transit is making a whining noise when accelerating, the most likely cause is low fluid in the power steering pump. Check the fluid and replace as much as is necessary and the whining sound should go away.

The transit van makes the whining noise at the back of the van not up the front

If the noise is the back of the van. It’ll be either the diff or prop shaft bearings mate.
