The Mitsubishi Outlander's back up camera can experience failure when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Cameras do not engage and the monitor displays a "Shift Position R" error from the service menu. When the system's communication is compromised, camera display is not activated when the gear shift is moved into reverse. In general this problem is caused by a software issue with the ETACS progRamming that utilizes CAN signals to connect to the Outlander's head unit. The OEM head unit is not wired to an external reverse signal input, but relies on the Controller Area Network for communication. Other options include replacing the head unit with one that can be grounded to receive the reverse shift signal from behind the vehicle.

If the reverse camera is not working in your Mitsubishi Outlander you may be dealing with faulty sensors or bad wiring in its assembly.

From my experience it’not a wiring fault with the camera and it’s not the switch thatengages it. It’s a fault in the software of the head unit. Camera engages perfectly fine whenyoh got to camera setting. I believe there is a current recall for 2022 models due to a similar issue

2021 Mitsubishi outlander sports backup camera will not come on the display where the radio is. Nothing is displaying the problem. Put the car in reverse and nothing happens. Bought car in March of 2021. What can I do?

SOLVED the problem in my case. Had the same problem. I simply inserted a pin into the tiny hole that resets the system (by me its over the screen to the left). The system turned off and then I turned off the car and started it up again. After about 2 minutes it finished and the reverse camera worked again. Would love to know if this works for anyone else.
