Reliability ratings are low across the board. Interior room is below-average for its class. The transmission has stumbling issues while starting.
checkCircleAlternativeBold The Bottom Line
A 2015 Ford Focus is a vehicle that seems to have been overlooked by Ford in many ways. In overall quality, the Focus loses out to the competition. In the end, it just is a low-rated compact car.

2015 Ford Focus: Quick Overview

  • The 2015 Ford Focus scores below average for reliability. They can be found used for $7,488 to $20,123. The ST is the most desirable model.
  • Three engines are available. The 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder offers the most power.
  • Focus ranks eleventh in fuel efficiency in the compact car class. Owners report the rear seats are very cramped.
  • Ford offers four Focus models in 2015. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)  gives the Focus a five-star crash test rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it a Top Safety Pick.
  • The 2015 Ford Focus ranks at the bottom of the list for compact sedans. For buyers looking for an affordable sports sedan, the ST model is fun, but the other models are not. There are better compact sedans on the market.

It is a fun car to drive, with all the bells and whistles.
I like the features, GPS, backup camera, sensors all around the car. I love the automatic start, the heated seats and steering wheel.

Great reliable car. Would purchase again.
Drives well, and has little to no maintenance needed. Great gas mileage. Much easier to maintain than newer cars. Average size car, not a luxury sedan. Would recommend. Have not had any huge issues while owning this car, aside from a recall that was handled by the manufacturer.

The Ford Focus is a good value vehicle. I feel confident that after I pay off my five-year loan, I will drive the car for another five years.
My Ford Focus is a four-door with a hatchback. It gets good gas mileage. I enjoy the technology of the car. It looks good on the outside. I wish I kept it cleaner on the inside.

That it's comfortable, drives well, and was a great value.
We just purchased this vehicle and have been having fun driving around. It's very comfortable! I have a chronic pain condition and it is comfortable for me to drive. We like the features like cruise control and a double click for opening the trunk, the ease of windshield wipers, and the automatic lights function. The only dislike I experienced was finding the defroster. I think I figured it out though. Also, the vehicle is a bright, cherry red, a super plus.

There are issues with the vehicles that are known problems! Buy elsewhere!
There are known transmission problems that we didn't know about until a year or more after purchasing the car. Many other issues that require taking it and leaving it for days at the dealership.
accountCircle April S
Cheaply made... It is seriously made of plastic.
There's a few recalls on this particular vehicle. I am at 76,000 miles and need a 3rd transmission! Then, there's a recall on the fuel pump so you'll be driving along with 3/4 tank of gas and your car just stops in the middle of the interstate like it ran out of gas! The only way to fix it is to add gas to it!

There are known transmission issues!
Transmission issues is a known issue thru the dealer. Poor quality and the dealerships make excuses. Trade in value is very poor.

It looks sporty but really is not.
The car drives ok but everything seems to break. Almost all the problems are cosmetic. The emergency brake casing started to fall apart.
accountCircle Joe R
The clutch has a design flaw. That should have been recalled.
I am part of a class action lawsuit over their faulty clutch. It is a manual clutch put in an automatic transmission. It has caused the book value of the car to plummet. I have had the clutch replaced. And the problems just start back up right away. I am waiting for the resolution of the suit to get rid of this albatross.

Second time transmission has failed me. Only 133,000 kms. Within minutes of posting, 3 friends indicated tranny troubles as well at 170,000. Don't know vehicles their year. Dealership said they can't help me. Never buying another Ford

Don't fall for it... Pretty red nightmare.
Backup camera and radio do not work. I have had to replace front end parts at only 18000 miles. This is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I would not recommend this make model or year. Honestly it has been nothing but a huge headache. 14000 miles when purchased and replacing parts in the first 30 days.

Great gas mileage and it is really pretty.
The focus transmission is a disaster. Its part of a major class action lawsuit. Ford has done nothing to help.

Reliable With Working Parts
I bought my car new-used. I didn't do as much research as I should have but I needed a new car. I bought it with 70,000 miles on it and within the first week of having it, check engine light came on. It needs a new clutch which is odd considering it's an automatic so it jumps when shifting through gears. The Bluetooth system works MOST of the time. When it isn't working, there isn't much of a way to fix it other than waiting for it to work again, which it will. It is very comfortable though, lots of room and the AC/heating system works fast and well. The trunk is super spacious, you can fit a lot in there.

I'll never buy another Ford.
I bought a two year old Ford focus st line with 18,000 miles on it. The engine needed replacing at 46,000 miles. It is nice to drive and handles well but apart from that everything and I mean EVERYTHING just seems to be so cheaply made now. It's black and looks very nice, but that's it. Iv had a 56 plate Fiesta, which was like a tank, and a 52 plate KA which was also very reliable. But my 67 plate focus just seems like it was made by a totally different company. Like it's some kind of Chinese knock off. Overall, I'm sad to say I will never buy another Ford. Or anything that says 'ecoboost' on it.

Great commuter car.
I bought mine used with 20,000 miles on it. I have the 5-sp. Manual, so no transmission issues. Only problem I've had is MAF sensor gone bad, used one bought online for $35 and replaced myself. I have a SE with heated leather seats and heated steering wheel. Heater will bake you out of the car. Peppy. Good trunk space. Handling package makes it fun. I get 40+mpg on my 40-mile one-way work commute. I'm a Ford guy and very pleased with my Ford Focus. My other is a Fiesta ST, also great!

Great size, great for the city, does not drive as well as I'd hoped.
This car is average. Unfortunately, I have had multiple issues with the transmission in this car. I have had to get it fixed in the shop twice due to round grinding noises when shifting from 1st-2nd gear. Though the car has been fixed, it still shifts uncomfortably in the low gears and does not accelerate quickly at all. Overall, I dislike the way it drives. The size of the car is great for living in a city and the car gets good gas mileage 26-32.

Transmission
I have a 2015 ford focus se automatic. At take off it shudders. Took it to ford they drove it said needs a new clutch and will cost over 2k. They know the clutchs are had and should have to replace them. They screwed up doing the duel clutch. And my car doesn't have a transmission dip stick have to take it to ford to check it and thatz over $100. Plus the lcd screen on the dashes going out already. I'll never have another ford again

Manual does not have any transmission issues
Bought my car new. Zero problems. Transmission issues are only with the auto. My girlfriend had the same year but auto, and I had to bring it in for fluid leaks in the transmission, which caused it to slip. Bad seals. Ford fixed it and it ran fine afterward. Drives great and has a european flavor. I've only had to replace the front brakes and tires. Happy with it. It will become my s**t kicker eventually.

So far I like this car. Paranoid that the transmission is going to fail!
My Ford Focus has a nice sleek sporty look for a four door sedan and it gets excellent gas mileage. It handles decently except the steering is over sensitive and the suspension seems to soft. The transmission is annoying because it surges while going slow and revs between shifts. From what I understand it is a manual transmission that a onboard computer controls its shifting.
accountCircle Amber T on October 15, 2021
Recall issues and stress.
The main issue has been a recall that we received a letter for almost 4 months ago, still waiting for the letter to have it fixed. It has been a stress because the letter stated to not get under a half tank of gas or else it could stall out and possibly cause an accident. If it weren't for the recall and delay in getting it fixed, I would probably feel better about the car.

Ford Focus: Transmission Quirks
My Ford Focus is great in that it transports me where I need to go rather safely and efficiently. My one complaint, however, is that this car type is known for having some transmission problems, and although my car functions well it is a little bit delayed and glitchy in its' acceleration because the Focus is essentially an automatic car that functions as if it is a manual.
accountCircle Joel on October 14, 2021
Wouldn’t buy another one
Automatic transmission clutch is horrible. Shudders everytime on takeoff and in second. Dealer just keeps reprograming to keep from replacing. Both rear wheel bearings went at about 40,000 miles. Trunk has false reading that it is open when it’s not and glovebox handle broke inside the door do only one latch releases. It was purchased new but I won’t own another.
accountCircle Lana K on October 13, 2021
Nice features but terrible drive.
I like the technology package, leather seats, and other very nice features. However, it is not that comfortable and it has had several recalls that I haven't been able to get to the dealer for yet. Performance is terrible. Problems with the clutch/transmission and hesitation after every stop is horrible. If I could go back, I would have never purchased this car.
accountCircle Lacy R on October 13, 2021
Good commuter, a lot of recall issues.
A lot of clutch problems in this model, have had in the shop 3 times to fix same recalled issue. It does get good gas mileage, so it is a reliable commuter car. It is not very roomy, especially when the front seats are all the way back. There's hardly any room for anyone to sit in the back and fairly small trunk space as well.
accountCircle Michael F on October 15, 2021
The thing I enjoy the most about the car is how smooth it runs.
For the most part I enjoy the make and model. It's easy to drive, comfortable and for the most part extremely reliable. I've recently had some issues with the brakes, normal wear and tear, which is frustrating as the model is fairly recent. Other than the break issues, I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Ford Focus transmission woes.
The Focus has an existing problem with the transmission that causes a pulling or jerking sensation. Very annoying. Eventually Ford came up with a fix that works, but I would never buy another one. In fact, I would never buy any Ford because I took so long for Ford to admit that there was an actual problem.
accountCircle Rebecca R on October 13, 2021
Overall good: could be better.
The starter in the car went bad quickly, which made the battery go bad. The car is also a little jumpy when you need to accelerate quickly. Gas mileage varies greatly. The mechanic that replaced the started said that it would need to be replaced frequently because of where it is placed in the car.
accountCircle Jennifer P on October 14, 2021
Compact small car-good on gas
Overall my car runs well and is especially good on gas. I had issues with my clutch last year but took it right to the dealership and luckily my car was under warranty so it was fixed right away. Occasional I hear noises when stopping but it is common with the brakes especially when it rains.

There have been a lot of recalls with this vehicle. When we first got it everything was fine, but things started to go downhill quickly. The gas meter stopped working, we've had the car for about 2 years and it has had 3 recalls and now needs a new transmission. I do not recommend this car.

Maybe it’s because I bought it cash as is and I’m a woman. Car has been terrible since I got it. It kept jerking and slipping when I pulled off. Even when I had customers in the car doing Lyft they’d notice my car losing speed. It’s back in the shop for the 5th time since I purchased it last year of 08/07/2020 due to the transmission. I don’t recommend the car had 89,000 miles a year later it has almost 109,000 I barely drive it. Yet the transmission is gone.

My vehicle is a 2015 ford focus. My car gets excellent mileage and rarely has any issue. I recently found out that when my empty light comes on for gas that means I have 120 miles left before I am actually out of gas. My car is perfect for a young person.

2015 ford focus hatchback.
Transmission recall and horrible shifting issues. It is reliable but has had many issues. It is a beautiful car looks wise but this car with so many issues wouldn't be my first choice. It is by far not worth the money unless you want to pay an extra two grand to fix the transmission.
accountCircle Josie F on April 27, 2021
You do not want to mess with perfection.
To date, I have had no problems with this sweet little vehicle. Compared to what I used to drive, this one is a dream. For a compact, the focus holds a very surprising amount of cargo and is a comfortable ride, even on less than perfect roads, I love the car very much.

Reliable vehicle but not enough space.
This vehicle is very reliable. I have not had any problems with its performance. I do however, not enjoy how small the backseat is. With two small children it is very difficult for me to find the space for both children and their belongings. I also am a fairly tall person, and I need the seat to be far back when I am driving. This does not allow driving to be comfortable when there is a car seat behind me.

Proud ford brand owner for over 40 years.
Initially there was a recall on the type of transmission; it was fixed and over 130 thousand miles later, it is still running smooth with no additional maintenance issues. It is great on gas economy and very comfortable. It has sufficient power for interstate driving, as well as city driving.

For the price point this is an awesome vehicle.
As far as cars go, this one is pretty average when it comes to quality. It is quite comfortable and handles really well. I also enjoy the gas mileage. The only problems have been the need for a few minor repairs. Nothing out of the ordinary. 7/10 rating from me.

My experience with a 2015 ford focus.
Very reliable car so far this year. It averages 30 mpg in city for me and the suspension makes the ride super smooth. The reverse camera helps so much in busy parking lots, but do not forget to still look out the back of your car. Unfortunately it does ride pretty low so that and bump, dip, or weirdly paved parking lots will cause you to scrape. I also wish the fuel tank was a little larger I believe it is a ten gallon tank which is awesome with the 30 mpg it gets but come winter time I wish I didn't have to fuel up so frequently.

Very good car with only a few minor issues.
Reliable and comfortable. Small car and hatchback, but still fits everything that I need. Includes backup camera. Occasional issues with acceleration after stopping at a red light or stop sign. Break is very sensitive. Runs out of windshield washer fluid quickly.

Pros and cons of ford focus.
The variable transmission has been replaced twice and still shutters. Besides that it is been a great small car. An above average person does not fit comfortably in it though. It gets great gas mileage and has a great hatchback area. The paint has held up well.

9 out of 10. Pretty chill. Made in America if you care about that. I do not.
I really like this car for the most part. The issue (as well as my sister's focus) is that this model seems to have a lot of recurring issues with the transmission. It was part of a recall but it has returned before outside of the recall window. Also, a sunroof could be cool.

I love the color that I was able to get and the different options for upgrades.
I love my car overall, it is great on gas and I have never had any issues with it mechanically. My only complaint really is the size, when I first bought the car it seemed big enough however it is really only big enough for the driver, there is no leg room in the backseat whatsoever and it is a miserable ride for passengers. I should have in hindsight for something bigger.

Reliable and Efficient Vehicle
I like the gas mileage I get driving my Ford Focus. It is reliable and gets me where I need to be. I really enjoy the back up camera, heated seats, and heated steering wheel. If I could change anything I would change the center counsel to include navigation and XM radio
accountCircle Chris C on April 3, 2021
It's comfortable and versatile. Sedans are dumb after owning a hatchback.
Flex Fuel hatchback automatic. Fun to drive, lots of room, comfortable family car. Had it over a year no problems.

Has done great for Minnesota!
There are a lot of things I like about my ford focus. It has heated seats and a heated steering wheel, which is great for living in Minnesota. Unfortunately, no automatic start though. There are two USB ports so I didn't have to buy a cigarette lighter adapter to charge my phone. I also really like the cloth seats! It is nice to be able to wear shorts and not have to peel my legs off when I get out, and the black interior actually does not get too hot. It is not bad in the summer, and the a/c works really well to cool things down quickly. For a smaller 4 door vehicle, the backseat is actually pretty comfortable and there is good space in the front. Sometimes I do have to move my seat up for my super tall friends, but that is any car. Overall, this has been a great vehicle. There have been 2 recalls, but both were okay in my car thankfully. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone and do not plan on changing vehicles anytime soon.

Do not recommend. Too many recalls.
There have been a lot of recalls with this vehicle. When we first got it everything was fine, but things started to go downhill quickly. The gas meter stopped working, we've had the car for about 2 years and it has had 3 recalls and now needs a new transmission. I do not recommend this car.

The ford focus is an alright car, it does what I need it to do.
I had purchased a red ford focus hatchback in 2012. I loved that car. Unfortunately, in 2015, it got totaled in car accident. I had to quickly buy a new car. I bought the same model. It just didn't have the same features as my red one. It had a transmission problem which is a design flaw ford has admitted to. However, it gets me around town so I cannot complain.

Ford focus... Great looking title car that goes a long ways.
It does awesome on gas, 4 door, only drawback is little leg room. Great for kids in back seat. Has all the bells and whistles except cannot get Sirius. Ac works wonderful, I live in desert so needed very much. Trunk is good size and four door. Great car.
accountCircle Ellen A on March 29, 2021
The only issue I have with my car is it seems as though the transmission is slipping. Sometimes it's like driving a bucking bronco.
Size is small. If you are on the heavy side like most of us this car is limited on space and comfy room.
accountCircle Alicia F on March 29, 2021
Reliable with great internal features!
My car was a great buy! I got it second hand and it has been very reliable. I love the features inside-the big touch screen, easy to use controls, hands free talking, and Bluetooth. The back up camera is a life saver. I do have issues sometimes with the car not acknowledging the key fob is nearby to unlock the doors for me, and I have to take it out of my purse so it gets a better connection, but that is a minor inconvenience. I would absolutely buy this car again.
accountCircle Jessica R on March 27, 2021
Nice but heavy and expensive on the gas.
Great reliability and it is a smooth ride vehicle. Large trunk and can be used for short and long trips. Only problem is the St burns through gas in the city and lasts slightly longer on the highway. Also my trunk leaks water into the vehicle, which has led to damage to my interior trunk.
accountCircle Ashley J on March 27, 2021
It's got a lot of perks for the cost. It has leather, navigation, satellite radio and a great look on the interior
I like the color of my car most, it's blue. It's a good car, gets me from where I am to where I need to go. It has a lot of perks for the price. Hopefully it holds up well.
accountCircle Brandon D on March 26, 2021
Big on creature comforts, small on mechanical prowess.
Class action lawsuit against this car for the clutch which was poorly designed and consistently needs repairs and attention. Weak engine, poor acceleration but great gas mileage. Adequate storage for a compact hatchback. Base model has some very upgraded features like leatherette seat covers, Bluetooth connectivity and built in Sirius radio.

Dark grey 2015 ford focus se.
I love being able to have my phone connected to my car via Bluetooth or USB or jack. My favorite quality would be the rearview camera as it is really helpful when trying to parallel park or simply making sure I do not hit any cars when backing up. My biggest issue with my car has been the automatic transmission, as around 11 and 16 mph, if you do not accelerate at a certain threshold the car shakes as it shifts between gears. Aside from the transmission concerns, the only other performance issue I have noticed is that the car does not perform well when there is heavy wind outside. When I am driving on a highway and there's strong wind I can always feel my car being pushed across the road and feel like I have less control. Other than those two concerns I feel like my car is completely safe, as someone who drives an hour to work and back, it has been incredibly reliable and has really nice interior features for an affordable price.
accountCircle Jane C on March 22, 2021
Small and gets good gas mileage.
I love the color but the transmission makes the car jerk and jump when you pull out from a stopped position. Ford says it does this because the car originally was made with a stick-shift and they converted it to automatic. The seats are kind of low and hard to get out of. It does get good gas mileage. The ac and heat work great.

Luxury feel with a moderate price.
Wonderful leather seats with a touch screen control panel, with additional button controls if you are not interested in navigating through a screen. Heated front seats. A smooth ride for my daily commute, only had to perform routine maintenance after driving it 5,000 miles.

Stick to trucks, ford. Cars are no longer your strong suit.
There have already been several recalls on this vehicle. Transmission. Doors. Fuel indicator. Also, water leaks into the passenger side floorboards. I have had this 'fixed' 3 times now. I would not purchase another ford sedan. Ford makes great trucks and SUV's. My boyfriend's never had problems with his mustangs, but their other cars are a big no.
accountCircle Logan K on March 20, 2021
The dual transmission, it shifts like a manual car but drives as a automatic.
I absolutely love driving my hatch, it is very spacious, and easy to drive. I have had the car for 3 years and had to replace transmission, and a few other things but even after that it still is one of my favorite cars. Comfort wise, the cloth seats and foot space is amazing. The trunk has plenty of space and the back seats can fold down to have even more room.
accountCircle Abbie M on March 17, 2021
It is an alright car. Has a few problems.
My transmission is going out after only six months of having it. My engine light turned on after four months and I found out the throttle body needed replacing so I fixed that and then I still had the same problems so I went to a different mechanic and had it checked out. The purge valve was messed up so I had that fixed but my clutch actuator b is broken.
